How to Use "Haben" in German Imperative Sentences | Easy German Learning

In German, the verb "haben" (to have) is often used in imperative sentences — when you're giving commands, advice, or strong suggestions.


Basic Rules

The imperative form depends on whom you are speaking to:


du (informal singular)


ihr (informal plural)


Sie (formal singular and plural)

1. "du" Form (informal singular)

When speaking to one person informally, use "hab" (without the "-en" ending).

✅ Examples:

Hab Geduld! 

→ Have patience!


Hab keine Angst! 

→ Don't be afraid!


Hab Vertrauen! 

→ Have trust!


📌 Note: You usually drop the -en ending and sometimes even the personal pronoun "du" itself.



2. "ihr" Form (informal plural)

When speaking to multiple people informally, use the ihr form.

It’s simply the present tense form without any changes.


✅ Examples:

Habt Mut!

→ Have courage!


Habt Spaß!

→ Have fun!


Habt Erbarmen!

→ Have mercy!

📌 Tip: Just add -t to the stem "hab-" to match the ihr form.

 


3. "Sie" Form (formal)

When speaking formally (to one or more people), use the infinitive form haben followed by Sie.


✅ Examples:

Haben Sie einen schönen Tag! 

→ Have a nice day!

Haben Sie Geduld mit uns! 

→ Have patience with us!


Haben Sie Vertrauen! 

→ Have trust!

📌 In the formal imperative, the verb comes first, and then Sie.
